Offers no resistance to flow when fully open
When the wedge is fully raised, a bore equal to the line cross-section is achieved; this keeps pressure loss to a minimum and contributes to energy efficiency.

Gate valves are full-bore shutoff valves that open and close the line through the motion of a wedge-shaped gate perpendicular to the flow axis. In the fully open position they offer almost no resistance to flow, so they are used only for shutoff (isolation), not regulation. As Denfor Endüstriyel, we supply solid-wedge and flexible-wedge, as well as rising-stem (OS&Y), gate valves, with body and connection options suited to large-diameter water, steam and process lines.

Why it matters
In the fully open position it offers almost no resistance to flow, providing full-bore shutoff on large-diameter lines.
When the wedge is fully raised, a bore equal to the line cross-section is achieved; this keeps pressure loss to a minimum and contributes to energy efficiency.
The standard valve type chosen for large-diameter water and steam lines that must be fully shut off during maintenance, repair or a fault.
Since fluid turbulence in a partially open position can erode the wedge surface, it is designed only for a fully open/fully closed function, not for flow regulation.
The OS&Y type is preferred in applications such as fire lines where the stem position must be visible from outside, while the non-rising stem type is preferred where space is limited.
Types
All three shut off the line through wedge motion; what sets them apart is the wedge structure and stem position.
Operating with a single-piece solid wedge, the standard choice for medium-pressure-class water and process lines.
Built with a flexible (springable) structure so the wedge conforms better to the body seat; preferred on steam and high-temperature lines.
The stem moves outward as the valve opens; preferred on fire water and critical isolation lines where the position must be visible from outside.

Pressure class
The PN class is chosen to match the line's operating pressure.

The questions we hear most often when quoting gate valves.
No. In a partially open position, fluid turbulence erodes the wedge surface; a globe valve or a proportional control valve should be used for flow regulation instead.
In the OS&Y (Outside Screw & Yoke) type, the stem moves outward as the valve opens and its position can be seen from outside; in the non-rising stem type the stem stays inside the body, which is preferred where space is limited.
On steam and high-temperature lines where temperature changes make it harder for the wedge to seat fully against the body seat, a flexible wedge provides more reliable sealing.
It is preferred in applications requiring full-bore isolation with minimum resistance to flow, such as large-diameter water distribution lines, steam lines and fire water lines.
