Roots Blowers

Roots blowers (lobe-type air blowers) are positive-displacement machines in which two non-contacting rotors turn against each other to advance air volumetrically without compressing it. They are preferred in pneumatic conveying, wastewater aeration and vacuum applications for their oil-free/dry operation, and are supplied with silencer and enclosure (low-noise) options.

Why it matters

What is a Roots blower used for?

Its positive-displacement design provides constant volumetric flow independent of pressure.

Oil-free, dry operation delivers clean air/gas

The rotors turn without touching each other or the casing, so the conveyed air or gas is not contaminated with oil.

Dual-direction use in vacuum and pressure conveying

The same machine can be used on the suction side to generate vacuum or on the discharge side to generate pressurized air.

Constant volumetric flow, independent of pressure

Thanks to its positive-displacement design, volumetric flow varies far less than with centrifugal blowers even as system pressure changes.

Silenced types run with low noise

With intake/discharge silencer and enclosure options, it can be brought in line with indoor facility noise standards.

Types

Sub-types of the Roots blower

All three operate on the non-contact rotation of two rotors; they differ in direction of use and noise level.

PNEUMATIC CONVEYING

Standard Roots blower

A widely used standard solution for the pneumatic conveying of dust, granules and light materials through a pipeline.

  • Constant volumetric flow
  • Pneumatic conveying lines
  • Oil-free operation
VACUUM APPLICATIONS

Vacuum-type Roots blower

Configured to operate on the suction side; used in wastewater treatment and vacuum collection lines.

  • Suited to vacuum applications
  • Wastewater aeration
  • Constant vacuum level
INDOOR USE

Silenced/enclosed Roots blower

With acoustic enclosure and silencers around the casing, used for indoor installations with noise sensitivity.

  • Low noise level
  • Suited to indoor installation
  • Enclosed/silenced design

Selection criteria

What data determines the right Roots blower?

Selection cannot be made without the first two items. The rest determine the noise level and drive type.

ParameterWhy it mattersWhat we need from you

Flow rate

Calculated from the demand of the conveying line or vacuum application.

m³/h

Pressure differential

Determined by the line's pressure or vacuum requirement.

bar

Air/gas temperature and contamination

Determines the rotor and casing material.

°C + contamination level

Vacuum or pressure

Whether the suction or discharge side will be used affects the design.

Vacuum / pressure

Noise/vibration requirement

Whether a silencer/enclosure is needed for an indoor installation.

FAQ

Questions from the field

The questions we encounter most often during the Roots blower quotation stage.

What is the difference between a Roots blower and a centrifugal blower?

Because a Roots blower is positive-displacement, it delivers constant volumetric flow independent of pressure; a centrifugal blower works by centrifugal force and its flow varies more with pressure changes.

Why does oil-free operation matter?

Because the rotors do not touch each other and need no lubrication, the conveyed air or gas is not contaminated with oil; this is a critical advantage in food, process and clean-air applications.

Is a silencer/enclosure always required?

It may not be needed outdoors or in facilities with low noise sensitivity; for indoor installations, a silencer and/or acoustic enclosure is generally recommended.

How is maintenance carried out?

The clearance between the rotors is checked periodically; the belt-pulley (if present) tension and the bearings are serviced regularly.

Do you only serve Istanbul?

No. While our office is on Istanbul's Anatolian side (Ataşehir), we supply and ship across Istanbul's European side, the surrounding provinces and the Marmara region, and Turkey as a whole — covering your equipment end to end, from a single source.
