Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers

A family of heat exchangers where metal plates are clamped together with gaskets in between. It can be opened for cleaning and expanded by adding plates when more capacity is needed — the most common solution for boiler rooms and domestic hot water lines.

Why it matters

What does a gasketed plate heat exchanger do?

You never send boiler water straight to the tap. A gasketed plate heat exchanger physically separates the two circuits, transferring heat without mixing the water — and it can be opened for cleaning and expanded when needed.

Separates the circuits

Lime scale and oxygen in mains water can't reach the boiler circuit. The boiler, exchanger and piping are protected from corrosion, and the boiler water treatment stays intact.

Produces hygienic hot water

Because water is heated instantaneously, it isn't held in large volumes for long periods. The storage-related legionella risk drops significantly when the system is correctly configured together with an accumulation tank.

Saves space in the boiler room

For the same capacity, the plate type takes up far less volume than a shell-and-tube type. This becomes decisive in tight boiler rooms and retrofit projects.

Separates pressure zones

In high-rise buildings, static pressure at the lower levels puts strain on the boiler. By separating zones with an exchanger, you run each circuit at its own pressure.

Efficiency through a small approach temperature

The counter-flow plate geometry can reach an approach temperature of 2–5 °C. This is what pays off in waste heat recovery and low-temperature regimes.

Can be opened for cleaning, and expanded

In the gasketed type, plates can be opened and cleaned, serviced against scaling. When capacity needs grow, plates are simply added without changing the frame — brazed and shell-and-tube types don't offer this flexibility.

Types

Sub-types of gasketed plate heat exchangers

All three are gasketed and can be opened; what sets them apart is the gasket/plate material and frame design.

STANDARD

Standard gasketed plate

With stainless steel (AISI 316) plates and EPDM/NBR gaskets, the primary choice for boiler rooms, domestic hot water and district heating lines.

  • The most cost-effective option
  • Capacity can be increased by adding plates
  • Gasket temperature limit ~140 °C (EPDM)
HARSH CHEMICAL / HIGH TEMPERATURE

Semi-welded

One side of the channel is laser-welded, the other gasketed. For aggressive, corrosive or refrigerant-type fluids, this removes any contact between the gasket and the fluid.

  • Preferred for refrigerant gases and aggressive chemicals
  • Higher pressure and temperature resistance
  • Semi-openable; serviced on one side only
SAFE SEPARATION

Double-wall

A double-layer construction with a leak-detection gap between the plates. Used on lines where the risk of drinking water, food or toxic fluids mixing must be eliminated entirely.

  • Eliminates the risk of cross-contamination
  • A preferred choice for food and drinking water projects
  • Lower thermal efficiency than the standard type

Selection criteria

What data determines the right gasketed plate heat exchanger?

Once the eight points below are clear, the choice narrows to a single model. We calculate whichever of these you don't already have.

ParameterWhy it mattersWhat we need from you

Thermal capacity

The amount of energy to be transferred. Oversizing raises the initial investment, undersizing costs comfort.

kW or kcal/h

Temperature regime

Inlet–outlet temperatures of the primary and secondary circuits. This directly determines the approach temperature and the number of plates.

e.g. 90/70 – 10/60 °C

Flow rate

The amount of fluid passing through each circuit. The number of plate channels and the connection diameter follow from this.

m³/h or l/s

Allowable pressure loss

Affects pump selection. Keep it low and the exchanger grows larger; keep it high and pump energy use rises.

kPa (typically 20–50)

Operating and design pressure

The PN class, based on building height and static pressure. In high-rise buildings this can be decisive on its own.

PN10 / PN16 / PN25

Fluid type and fouling

Water, a glycol mixture, steam, seawater or a process liquid. A fouling factor is added to the capacity as a margin.

Fluid + fouling margin

Plate and gasket material

The plate determines corrosion resistance, the gasket material determines temperature and chemical resistance. In water with high chloride content, stainless isn't enough and titanium is needed; above 140 °C, Viton is considered instead of EPDM.

AISI 316 / Ti · EPDM / NBR / Viton

Connection type and size

Compatibility with the existing installation. Flanged, threaded or welded, along with mounting clearance and service margin.

DN size + connection type

FAQ

Questions from the field

The questions we hear most often when quoting gasketed plate heat exchangers.

Should I choose standard gasketed or semi-welded?

For water/water applications where ease of service matters, standard gasketed is sufficient. If the fluid is aggressive, corrosive or a refrigerant gas, or the temperature/pressure exceeds the limit of a standard gasket, the semi-welded type is preferred.

How often should the plates be cleaned?

It depends on water hardness and operating temperature. In a properly treated circuit, problems may not appear for years; with hard mains water, an annual check is reasonable. The sign is clear: a drop in outlet temperature at the same regime, together with rising pressure loss, indicates scaling.

How is the gasket material selected?

EPDM is the standard choice for general-purpose water circuits (up to roughly 140 °C). For oily or hydrocarbon-containing fluids NBR is used, and for lines needing high temperature and chemical resistance Viton is considered.

What else is needed alongside the exchanger?

Usually a circulation pump, strainer, safety valve, expansion tank and a valve group for circuit separation. Bundling these into a single quote is an advantage for both compatibility and lead time — we can supply all of them.

Do you only serve Istanbul?

No. While our office is on Istanbul's Anatolian side (Ataşehir), we supply and ship across Istanbul's European side, the surrounding provinces and the Marmara region, and Turkey as a whole — covering your boiler room equipment end to end, from a single source.
